I was shopping at Oxford Street and in the middle of the road it suddenly hit me: I felt normal. I felt casual. Not a tourist, not an overly excited newbie – just me as in Mechelen, but in London. No need to check my phone to know what bus to take, no urge to snap a picture of myself on Oxford Street, and no FOMO seeing and doing everything I was surrounded by.
It shows in the small things. It’s pointing people in the right direction. It’s becoming a member of the local library. It’s having small talk with your neighbour. It’s getting take away Indian from that dodgy place in your street (and still regret two days later). It’s paying bills, preparing UK tax returns. It’s going to Belgium and feeling away from home.
